Let’s Talk About: College

College. Did anyone else just cringe or is it only me? Guaranteed if you say this one little word in front of a group of juniors, one of them is bound to cry or gasp or freak out a bit. Even some seniors might do this. Remember when you were little and someone used to ask “what do you want to be when you grow up?” and the answer was always something like a ballerina, a rock star, an astronaut, etc. Now it’s something along the lines of a nurse, a teacher, a surgeon, or other feasible careers. What happened? Where did the time go? At what point was it unacceptable to dream of being a rockstar and more acceptable to want to become a doctor?

Now I can’t be the only one who is frantically trying to visit my entire list of schools before I become a senior in less than a year on top of taking the SATs and ACTs. It seems like the list goes on and on and on and on… and every time I finally finish looking at all of the websites for my list of schools, another one seems to find its way on there. I don’t know how this happens every single time, it just does. Anyway moving on. Let’s talk about majors.

To answer that oh so common “what do you want to be when you grow up?”, I want to be a nurse. I want to do something that will help people and make a difference in the world. And if people ask me “what if you don’t get into a nursing school?”, I’m going to minor in business and I can always just pick a different major. What’s most important to me is that I’m happy doing whatever I decide to do in the future. So with that, I leave you with a quote from my favorite book ever Oh The Places You’ll Go.

“And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.) KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS! So… be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea, you’re off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!”

XOXO,
